A common question always asked by attendees when watching our sculptors at work – is it really sand? YES, it is 100% sand.
When creating a sand sculpture, there are two types of sand you can use ‐ brickies sand or beach sand. Brickies sand is a sharp quarried “fatty” sand and comes in a variety of colours from whites, yellows, oranges through to deep reds depending on the part of Australia that the sand is quarried. You’ll see our sculptors carving their masterpieces from white brickies sand.
All sand sculptures, no matter the size follow the same construction. Firstly the sand is compacted into formwork using either a rammer or hand tamper, with the sculptor adding a small amount of water as this allows the sand to be made into a solid block of sand to carve, similar to a block of sandstone. Watching our sculptors at work is a must see at Beyond the Sand.
